How to Choose Hockey Skates – Size, Width, Stiffness & Heat Molding

Hejduk Sport Guide

How to Choose Hockey Skates

Properly chosen hockey skates affect speed, stability and comfort on the ice. The wrong size or unsuitable construction can cause pain, pressure points and loss of control during push-off.

In this guide, we explain how to choose the right skate size, width, stiffness and construction based on the player's level.

01 / size

How to choose the right hockey skate size

Hockey skates should fit much tighter than regular shoes, usually about 0.5 to 1 size smaller.

Properly fitting skates:

  • your toes lightly touch the toe cap when standing upright
  • your foot moves slightly back when you bend your knees
  • the heel is firmly locked in place
  • the foot does not move inside the skate

Skates should not feel “comfortable and loose”. If they are too roomy, you lose energy during push-off.

02 / home measuring

How to measure your foot at home

For a more accurate fit, we recommend measuring your foot length in millimeters:

1.
Stand with your heel against a wall.
2.
Measure the distance to the tip of your longest toe.
3.
Add 2–4 mm of extra space.

This measurement is more accurate than a standard EU shoe size.

03 / width and fit

Skate width (fit)

Not every foot is the same. Modern models offer different skate widths:

If you feel pressure on the sides of your foot or numbness in your toes, you probably need a wider model.

04 / player level

Boot stiffness by player level

Skate stiffness affects energy transfer, stability and comfort.

Recreational player
A softer construction offers more comfort.
Advanced player
Medium stiffness balances comfort and performance.
Professional player
A stiff composite boot maximizes power transfer.

A model that is too stiff without sufficient skating technique can cause discomfort.

05 / construction

Skate construction – what affects performance

Boot shell

Higher-end models use composite materials with better torsional stiffness.

Tongue

A multi-layer tongue protects the instep from lace pressure.

Blade holder

A higher-quality holder provides more stable blade guidance.

Runner

Better steel holds its edge longer and allows more precise turns.

Heat molding hockey skates

Higher-end models allow heat molding. After heating, the boot shell adapts better to the shape of your foot.

Benefits:

  • faster break-in period
  • fewer pressure points
  • better heel lock

07 / kids and adults

Junior vs. senior hockey skates

For young players, it is important to:

  • avoid overly stiff skates
  • not buy skates that are too large “to grow into”
  • watch ankle stability

Skates that are too large negatively affect skating technique.

08 / what to avoid

Common mistakes when choosing hockey skates

  • Choosing a size that is too large
  • Ignoring foot width
  • Choosing the stiffest model regardless of player level
  • Not heat molding new skates
  • Underestimating skate sharpening
09 / on-ice performance

How sharpening affects performance

The right hollow affects stability, speed and agility.

Deeper hollow
more grip
Shallower hollow
more speed

10 / fit check

How to tell skates do not fit

Properly chosen skates should hold the foot firmly, but they should not cause pain.

Your skates are probably not the right fit if:

  • your heel lifts while skating
  • your foot moves around inside the skate
  • your toes are strongly curled
  • the skate presses painfully around the ankle

11 / higher-end models

When should you invest in higher-end skates?

A higher-end model is worth it if:

  • you train several times a week
  • you play competitively
  • you need maximum performance

Recreational players often make full use of mid-range skates.
